about
Pale Ribbons Tossed into the Dark are Michael Terren, Djuna Lee, and Jameson Feakes, based in Boorloo/Perth, Australia.
Our previous work in other settings includes improvised ensembles, contemporary classical, and experimental electronic music. The vocabularies we’d each developed in these contexts tend to reinforce from the periphery, committed to sonic world-building rather than asserting dominance or hierarchy. This dynamic played out over many hours of recording, refined over many iterations of re-recording and re-interpretation. The resulting pieces draw from disparate musical traditions in a way we think is quite unique.
"The Creak" is the first track from our forthcoming, debut self-titled album—more details soon. The band's name comes from the essay “Mandible” by Doireann Ní Ghríofa. Its themes of care at a distance, the poetics of representing nature, and the affective histories of place inform our motivation to make recordings together.
The tracks on "Pale Ribbons Tossed into the Dark" were realised between 2018–21 on the area between Danjanberup (Smiths Lake/North Perth) and Wu-Rut Woorat (Maylands Peninsula). We acknowledge the endurance and resilience of the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation in their custodianship of this very special place, and honour their elders past and present. Sovereignty was never ceded.
